healthy_eatingHere’s how you can improve your stress levels through sensible eating.
  1. Prevent low blood sugar – don’t skip meals. Eat regular, healthy, small meals.
  2. Avoid stimulants which may increase anxiety, such as caffeine.
  3. Keep a store of low-energy snacks handy such as carrot and celery sticks, unbuttered popcorn, chewing gum, rice cakes spread with Marmite and the odd hard sweet to satisfy your sweet cravings.
  4. Sip away your stress: herbal teas with chamomile, lemon balm, lavender, and valerian, together with a spoonful of honey, soothes the nerves.
  5. Eat calming foods: tryptophane, an amino acid, boosts the formation of serotonin, the ‘feel good’, calming brain chemical. Unrefined carbohydrates, nuts and bananas are rich in tryptophane.
  6. Boost your energy levels. Small amounts of protein (cheese, eggs, chicken, meat) contain the amino acid tryptamine that can give you a boost when stress tires you out. Take ready prepared portions to work.
  7. Be carb wise. Avoid refined starches like white bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. High-fibre, whole-grain alternatives break the cycle that stimulates hunger by keeping blood sugar levels stable. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat yoghurt and cottage cheese work well, too.

fumatorFumul de tigara contine peste 4.000 de substante chimice diferite, din care peste 300 sunt toxice pentru om nicotina, arsenic, radon, cianuri, fenol, DDT, azbest, benzen, monoxid de carbon, formaldehida, etc.) si alte 43 sunt cancerigene. Cei mai toxici compusi sunt nicotina, gudroanele si monoxidul de carbon. Nicotina stimuleaza inima prin eliberarea de catecolamine care cresc tensiunea arteriala, frecventa cardiaca si nevoia de oxigen a inimii. De asemenea, nicotina stimuleaza sistemul nervos, legându-se de receptorii colinergici centrali dupa numai 7 secunde de la inhalare. Aceasta activeaza caile neuro-umorale si duce la eliberarea de hormoni si neurotransmitatori. Asa se explica efectele euforice si instalarea dependentei de nicotina.

 

More children to get the swine flu vaccine

Children aged between six months and five years will start to be immunised against swine flu from this month.

GPs have been urged to speed up the vaccination programme

It follows an surge in the rate of infection in young children after schools returned from the summer break.

A report last month suggested that up to a third of youngsters in some areas may have had swine flu without showing symptoms.

GPs were last week urged to go "full throttle" to vaccinate as many vulnerable patients as possible.

More than one million people in the UK have been vaccinated a month after the programme began - one in 10 in the priority groups.

Overall the Health Protection Agency says swine flu has not been as bad as predicted for the autumn with the number of new cases about half of what they were in the summer.

Latest figures show the number of new cases of infection is falling or remaining steady across the UK.

In England last week, there were 46,000 cases, down from 53,000.

Scotland reported just over 21,000, about the same as the previous week.

In 2009 exista cel mai mic buget pentru sanatate din ultimii noua ani, ca valoare absoluta. Care sunt cauzele si ce solutii pot fi propuse? SAR a facut o analiza a politicilor de sanatate si farmaceutice in Romania, in care se arata ca deteriorarea recenta a performantelor sistemului sanitar din Romania este provocata de subfinantare si de lipsa unor reforme consecvente. Sorin Ionita, directorul Societatii Academice din Romania, discuta online cu cititorii joi, la ora 11.30.

Bugetul alocat sanatatii pe 2009 a scazut cu aproape 20% fata de anul trecut. Din lipsa banilor, anul acesta s-au incercat diferite masuri noi care sa reduca si mai mult cheltuiala cu medicamentele. Eficacitatea acestora asupra bugetului sanatatii ar fi oricum limitata, cat timp medicamentele reprezinta 22-23% din cheltuiala cu sanatatea. Directorul Societatii Academice din Romania, Sorin Ionita, discuta online cu cititorii despre starea sistemului medical din Romania joi, la ora 11.30.

SAR a facut o analiza a politicilor de sanatate si farmaceutice in Romania, in care se arata ca deteriorarea recenta a performantelor sistemului sanitar din Romania este provocata de subfinantare si de lipsa unor reforme consecvente, dar si de deciziile opace si intempestive de stabilire a preturilor la medicamente, supraimpozitare si alocare distorsionata a fondurilor.

SAR propune solutii pentru evitarea unei crize majore in sistemul sanitar si farmaceutic romanesc, criza avand toate sansele sa se agraveze in lunile urmatoare.

Raceala si gripa: care e diferenta?

Desi Raceala si Gripa au multe simptome asemanatoare, Raceala este in general usoara, dar Gripa tinde sa fie mult mai severa ca manifestare.
Deseori Raceala debuteaza cu stari de oboseala, stranut, tuse si nas infundat. Este posibil sau nu, sa apara si febra, dar deobicei ea este cu 1-2°C mai ridicata decit in mod normal. Pot apare dureri musculare, iritatie sau rosu in git, ochii lacrimosi si dureri de cap. Cu cit Raceala avanseaza, consistenta mucozitatilor nazale devine mai groasa si se trece de la culoarea galbuie la cea verzuie. Toate aceste simptome insa pot varia la fiecare raceala.

Raceala dureaza de la la 3-4 zile pina la 10 zile. Majoritatea adultilor au 1-2 raceli/an, in timp ce copiii pot avea 5-8 raceli/an. Numarul racelilelor creste cind oamenii prefera sa-si petreaca cit mai mult timp afara.
